My Boy Jack The year is 1913 and WW1 is imminent. Rudyard Kipling, the world’s youngest Nobel literary laureate and an ardent imperialist, is publicly urging his country’s sons to war. His own son, Jack, is myopic and under-aged, yet Kipling assists him in getting a commission despite the doubts from his family. Jack is lost in his first day of action. The play focuses on the agony of the poet and author over the death of his only son and how, in his despair, he learned the true cost of conflict. This is a powerful and moving account of a son lost to the questionable benefits of war. The action takes place at Batemans and on the Western Front, and the dramatization requires strong playing with an emphasis on family relationships. |
